Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery: History

Bruce L. Cunningham, MD, MS Prior to 1976, there were no full time plastic surgically trained attending physicians at the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Bruce Cunningham became Chief of the Division in 1984 and began plans to establish a residency in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Minnesota.

In 1991, provisional status was granted by the Residency Review Committee and the first resident in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Minnesota was accepted. Upon first review in 1993, the residency was granted full approval by the Committee.

The program provides broad-based training in plastic surgery and fully prepares the graduates for direct entry into either private or academic practice, or placement into advanced fellowship training.
