Welcome to the Division of Surgical Oncology


Welcome to the Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Minnesota. The Division is directed by Todd M. Tuttle, M.D. Our mission is to advance knowledge and improve the surgical care of cancer patients as a center of excellence in:

  • clinical care and research;
  • basic science, translational, and outcomes research;
  • education of surgical residents and fellows.

To accomplish these goals, the Division has established collaborative efforts with the Masonic Cancer Center, the School of Public Health, Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery, and Continuing Medical Education. Multidisciplinary teams (Surgical Oncology, Medical Oncology, and Radiation Oncology) provide coordinated care to cancer patients.

Diseases:

Our faculty is involved in the care and research of a wide variety of malignancies including:

  • breast
  • colon and rectal
  • liver and bile ducts
  • pancreas
  • stomach
  • melanoma
  • sarcoma
  • endocrine (adrenal, thyroid, and parathyroid glands)
  • head and neck disorders

Specialized Surgical Treatment:

Our faculty are involved in the research and development of specialized cancer treatments including:

  • high volume
    - liver resection
    - pancreatic resection
  • laparoscopic resection for colorectal cancer
  • laparoscopic liver resection
  • laparoscopic pancreas resection
  • radiofrequency ablation
  • brachytherapy for breast cancer
  • cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic peritoneal chemotherapy
  • sentinel lymph node biopsy
  • minimally invasive parathyroidectomy
  • laparoscopic adrenalectomy
  • laparoscopic staging of gastrointestinal cancers
