Lustgarten Foundation 2009 Request for Proposals Deadline: July 31, 2008 (Letter of Intent) The goal of the RFP is to make rapid advances in the battle against pancreatic cancer through a combination of cutting edge technology and novel ideas. Grants must focus on adenocarcinoma of the pancreas. Grants on all areas related to adenocarcinoma of the pancreas are welcome. This year the Foundation is particularly interested in grants studying the Kras pathway. Applications will be accepted from individual investigators as well as from collaborating institutions. Grants will be awarded for a one-year period for a maximum amount of $100,000, of which no more than 10% can be used for indirect costs. Society of University Surgeons Junior Faculty Grant Award Deadline: August 1, 2008 This award is intended to support the research of a surgeon whose work involves the basic science that underlies a surgical disease. $30,000 is available for one year with the option to apply for a second year. Gateway for Cancer Research (Gateway) Clinical Investigation Grant Program Deadline: August 11, 2008 (preliminary applications) The overall goal of the Clinical Investigation Grant Program of Gateway for Cancer Research (Gateway) is to stimulate innovative research relevant to cancer therapy (e.g., new agents, immunotherapy, biological response modifiers, gene therapy), clinical nutrition, and cancer integrative medicine. The Organization supports innovative clinical research in conventional as well as integrative therapies. The Clinical Investigation Grant Program is a mechanism to encourage investigators directly focused on clinical problems and clinical applications of basic research in phase I/II research studies. Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research Seed Grant Program Deadline: August 15, 2008 The aim of this program is: To provide start-up funding for basic scientists and clinicians who intend to test innovative ideas for improving the diagnosis and current therapies and to develop new treatment modalities for pancreatic cancer; To obtain preliminary data required for additional funding from other agencies for pancreatic cancer research; To impact on the understanding of pancreatic cancer cell biology, biochemistry, physiology, morphology and response to therapy; To establish collaborations within the field for mutual projects that can be considered for further funding. Funding is provided on a year-to-year basis in the amount of $50,000. Programs can be extended for one more year upon a competitive renewal/ progress report, which is evaluated by the Advisory Board. Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Physician Faculty Scholars Deadline: August 29, 2008 The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Physician Faculty Scholars program is designed to strengthen the leadership and academic productivity of junior medical school faculty who are dedicated to improving health and health care. Association for Academic Surgery Roslyn Faculty Research Award Deadline: September 1, 2008 The intent is to award those within 5 years of their first academic faculty job who have not received a previous career development award. Minnesota Medical Foundation Research and Equipment Grants Deadline: September 1, 2008 Research and equipment grants are awarded to Medical School faculty for basic and clinical research. Priority is given to new faculty who are establishing a research program, to established faculty exploring new areas of research, and for interim support. Thoracic Surgery Foundation for Research and Education Nina Starr Braunwald Career Development Award Deadline: October 15, 2008 This biennial award of $110,000 is for two years to support the research career development of a woman cardiac surgeon who holds a full-time faculty appointment and who is within 10 years of completion of thoracic surgery residency. The award is intended to provide salary for the recipient and/or direct research support (equipment, supplies, technical assistance) for women who wish to further their investigational skills. Thoracic Surgery Foundation for Research and Education Research Grants Deadline: October 15, 2008 TSFRE Research Grants provide operational support of original research efforts by cardiothoracic surgeons who have completed their formal training, and who are seeking initial support and recognition for their research program. Awards of up to $30,000 a year for up to 2 years are made each year to support the work of an early-career cardiothoracic surgeon (within 5 years of first faculty appointment). Thoracic Surgery Foundation for Research and Education Research Fellowships Deadline: October 15, 2008 TSFRE Research Fellowships provide support of up to $35,000 a year for up to 2 years for surgical residents who have not yet completed cardiothoracic surgical training. These awards are designed to provide salary and/or direct experimental support for surgeons and surgical trainees who wish to acquire investigational skills. Although a specific research program is required as the major component of the application, emphasis in making the award is placed on the potential of the applicant, based on prior accomplishments, and the quality of the educational experience for the applicant. Thoracic Surgery Foundation for Research and Education Career Development Award Deadline: October 15, 2008 TSFRE Career Development Award provides salary support of up to $50,000 a year for up to 2 years for applicants who have completed their residency training and who wish to pursue investigative careers in cardiothoracic surgery. These awards are designed to provide salary support for the development of cardiothoracic surgical investigators. Preference is given to investigators (either clinical or laboratory based) that are able to demonstrate unique potential for a successful career in investigative cardiothoracic surgery. Awards should allow the investigator to diminish the financial impact of reduced clinical activity in order for the applicant to cultivate skills that will enhance credibility and expertise in investigation. Preference is given to applicants who are able to demonstrate clearly focused goals in an appropriately supportive and nurturing environment. Francis Family Foundation Parker B. Francis Fellowship Program Deadline: October 17, 2008 The ideal candidate is one with evidence of strong aptitude in research and who is in transition from post-doctoral trainee to independent investigator. It is essential that there be evidence of accomplishment and proficiency in research. Clinical or basic science departments are suitable; however, it is expected that the proposed research will focus on lung biology or lung disease. The total budget is limited to $50,000 for the first year, $52,000 for the second and $54,000 for the third. American College of Surgeons Faculty Research Fellowships Deadline: November 1, 2008 The American College of Surgeons is offering two-year faculty research fellowships, through the generosity of Fellows, Chapters, and friends of the College, to surgeons entering academic careers in surgery or a surgical specialty. The fellowship is to assist a surgeon in the establishment of a new and independent research program. Applicants should have demonstrated their potential to work as independent investigators.
